James Cook University (JCU) is breaking new ground in remote education with the rollout of a high-speed satellite internet service in partnership with Cairns-based AirBridge Networks. This initiative is bringing reliable internet connectivity to some of Queensland’s most remote communities, offering students unprecedented access to higher education opportunities.
Bringing Satellite Connectivity to Remote Communities
The collaboration leverages Vocus Starlink services, utilising low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellites to deliver dependable internet access. This cutting-edge solution has been implemented at JCU locations and student accommodations in Thursday Island, Burketown, Dajarra, and Emerald. To further support prospective students, JCU is also offering free introductory Learn JCU modules, enabling remote communities to explore university programs with ease.
Dean Coran, JCU’s Head of Digital Infrastructure Delivery, described the transformative impact of the partnership:
“This advancement has provided reliable internet connectivity so people who wouldn’t normally have opportunities or reliable internet can come in and get a feel and taste for what higher education is like and the different courses that JCU provides,” he said.
“Before Starlink, the only solution we had for these remote areas was 4G connectivity, which had hardly any reception, had bandwidth issues, and was more susceptible to outages as you’re relying on phone towers and old technology.
“We’ve also enhanced the connectivity with the same solution at our research stations at Fletcherview Station and Orpheus Island. Orpheus Island would have weekly outages sometimes, and since we’ve put Starlink in, they haven’t had one.”
Portable Solutions for Challenging Regions
In the Emerald area, where communication challenges are especially acute, JCU has introduced ARNI™ Air, a customised and portable Starlink solution. This innovation ensures that students staying in temporary accommodations have access to reliable internet, addressing a critical barrier to learning.
Commitment to Digital Equality
AirBridge Networks General Manager Jordan Morris expressed enthusiasm for the partnership and its broader mission:
“AirBridge supports JCU’s vision for remote education and recognise the importance of First Nations, rural and remote communities having equal levels of digital access and education, no matter the location,” he said.
“With reliable internet access now available, students and community members can not only improve their digital literacy skills but access paths to modern education through various JCU programs.”
A New Era for Education
By addressing long-standing connectivity challenges, JCU and AirBridge Networks are making higher education more accessible than ever for rural and remote communities. This partnership demonstrates the power of innovative technology to bridge gaps and create new opportunities for learning and growth.
